Can we take the time to talk lifelong friends?

As we go through life we meet some amazing people. Some may come and go and some just stick. There are friends from school, friends from sports or activities, family friends, neighborhood friends, church friends, college friends, mom friends, friends that are great to travel with, friends that are good for a night out, friends that love a movie night, you get the point.

These friends are amazing.

I had a best friend growing up that I would still call a best friend today even though I haven’t seen or talked to her in years. I’m fairly certain if I called her up and said lets go have a night out she’d be on board, even though we don’t know a single thing about each other anymore.

I have many high school friends I will be excited to see and chat with at my 10 year reunion this year that I have some great memories with, or spent every day with on dance team or in class. These high school friends are the group that you tell about your first boyfriend and go to prom together with your dates. The friends that you will go kick some butt for when that boy breaks her heart. The friends that you get caught at your first party with.

Then there’s those church friends, the ones you can count on through hard times. They may be 10 or they may be 80 but they have the biggest hearts. They show up with baked goods to celebrate your wins or with meals to pray and cry with you when life gets tough.

You have mom friends. The ones that you call when you’re not sure if you should take your child to the doctor. The friends who love your kids as their own, who know every nasty detail of your labor and delivery and show up at the hospital to see you and the sweet baby. The ones who you throw a 5 pm new years eve party with while your kids are young. The ones you cry to when you have a bad “mom-ing” day and feel like a failure, laugh with when your kids say “shit” far more than they should, or celebrate with when those babies do anything slightly successful. Being in this phase of life now, they are truly some of the best. Mom’s just get it.

Then you have the friends who are good at specific things. The ones you text when you’re not sure how to do your makeup or what to wear.  The ones that know how to bake the best cake, write the best apology, what your blood test results mean, the best color to paint your wall, the current tax rates, or how to fix a flat tire. And they always answer.

Let’s face it, we rely on all these friends to complete our circle. That’s the best way to do it because we know we can’t do it all on our own.

But what about those friends that are all the above? Maybe you just met them or maybe you’ve been friends since kindergarten. You know those friends that walk into your life and you just know you’ll be close with forever? Those friends that no matter how long you go without talking to or seeing each other, you still love and can pick back up right where you left off? Those friends that God proves he sent for a reason? And you just know they were meant to be by your side.

Over the years, I’ve met a handful of those friends. Some of them I only met in the past few years, but we found out quickly we were meant to be in each others lives for a reason! Others I’ve known since birth, there is no better friend than your very own sister! And of course, my favorite, the one I vowed to spend my life with. The rest are in between, but they’ve stuck, they’ll always stick. They’ve left an impact. They’ve gone through things with me that no one else has. They understand far more than others. They’ve had conversations with me that I couldn’t have with just anyone.

And for that I’m beyond thankful. I’m so thankful for those friends that I can be real with. I’m thankful for those crying conversations, good or bad. I’m thankful for those “I need your help” moments, whether being the one to help or being the one who needs help. I’m thankful for you all, you know who you are. We need more of you in this world. We need more “I love you, pal” and “I got your back, girl” kind of people.

Let’s got out and be those people. 🤍
